Promise Ring History
Promise ring history dates all the way back to Greco-Roman times. Arranged marriages and betrothals were the norm and rings were worn to show proof of contact. In ancient times marriages were treated like business contracts and human beings like property. It was a requirement for the groom to present his bride with a ring as a promise of impending marriage. For the wealthiest class there were gold rings. The lower classes used less expensive materials and in Roman times women would even wear rings made from iron. These rings were heavy and uncomfortable to wear. Thank goodness for gold and silver!
In the 19th century the engagement ring became popular and the betrothal lost favor. People were marrying more for love and less for business. The promise ring didn't show up in the history books until the late 20th century. Promise rings were originally given as a pre-engagement ring. It would be given by a young man to his potential bride as a way to propose marriage without actually doing so. Pre-engagement rings represent that the couple intends to get married but is not ready to actually plan for the wedding yet.
As the idea of the promise ring caught on jewelers began making other types of promise rings. For example there are friendship rings that are exchanged between best friends. There are religious rings that show devotion to one's faith. There are even purity rings which represent sexual abstinence until marriage. There are many different meanings that can be applied to a simple ring. Promise rings are sometimes crafted to resemble engagement rings. They often feature diamonds or other gems. These gems are usually quite small because promise rings are made to be affordable.
A growing trend in promise rings is the band style ring. Band rings are great for teens and young adults who want a more modern look. Men are starting to wear promise rings which is something being done for the first time in promise ring history. Until now, the ring was worn by the young lady. Today guys are also wearing rings, most often wide silver or titanium bands. Another popular trend in rings is engraving. Having a personalized message engraved on a ring is a great way to make it even more meaningful and personal.
